Why You Should Adopt a Shelter Pet

Updated: 3 days ago

People often buy pets of distinguished breeds for thousands of dollars to meet their preferences with regard to appearances, personalities, and lifespans of pets. Labrador Retrievers cost around $1000, Corgis can reach $3000, while Persian Cats reach up to $5000; all of which are highly sought out pet breeds with reputable appeal.

An estimated 6.5 million pets enter US animal shelters annually. Half dogs, half cats. Here’s why you should adopt one of them:

Waived Fees and Cheap Prices with Prerequisites Met

The adoption fee of a shelter animal usually ranges from $50-$300, unlike the thousands of dollars that dog breeders charge. This fee will typically include met prerequisites for a pet to be adopted, such as vaccinations, health exams, flea/tick prevention treatments, spaying/neutering, and microchips. Pet breeders usually don’t provide these prerequisites in their pets, and buyers must meet the prerequisites on their own.

Some adoption fees in shelters are waived to encourage people to adopt older or more unattractive dogs. It’s important to note that there are many other expenses like food and vet visits that must be met in order to have a pet, whether it be from a shelter or a breeder, but the initial acquisition of a pet costs much less for shelter animals.

Save them from Euthanization and Provide a Better Life

Around 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized every year, with around 80% being healthy. Most of these pets don’t deserve this, as they are perfectly healthy and perfectly adoptable. Adopting a shelter animal could change the rest of its life drastically. For them, it’s a matter of either an injection or a life filled with love and happiness.
