Self-Care Isn't Selfish

I know that we’ve all heard about self-care at one point in our lives. Self-care, self-love, blah, blah, blah. But I think that very few of us actually know what self-care means and its importance. Self-care is important for humans to thrive and live life to its fullest. Not taking care of yourself is like throwing yourself away, putting others before you. It isn’t supposed to be selfish, but rather an act of valuing yourself.

Self-care can mean different things to different people. Facials, manicures, and pedicures aren’t necessarily the ideal definition of self-care. To me, self-care is about taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This can include getting a good night’s sleep, having a clean diet, exercising, going on walks, painting, and the list goes on. It’s really about the little restorative activities that you do on a daily basis to keep yourself from burning out. Even though self-care may seem like a simple concept, it’s often overlooked.

The first thing that comes to people’s minds when talking about self-care is the fact that they don’t have enough time to practice such a thing. But, you can spend five hours scrolling through Instagram and four hours binge watching Netflix? How funny. You do have time! It’s all about setting your priorities right, and realizing just how important self-care is. Here are two basics:

  1. It will help develop a healthy relationship with yourself so that you’re able to give off good vibes to your loved ones.

  2. It's like a little reminder that your needs are just as important. We tend to put others before ourselves but by putting yourself first, you are realizing your own value.

It is really important that I talk about the difference between real self-care and the aesthetically pleasing, Instagram version of self-care. On Instagram, the term self-care is widely used by younger generations, and as a result, misunderstood and thrown around. Ideally, self-care is supposed to be seen as an act of self-preservation, but nowadays treated as a ‘treat yourself.’ We see countless images of everything and anything being tagged as self-care, when all we see are spas, facials, and other luxurious things.

My biggest pet-peeve when it comes to Instagram self-care is the fact that people seem to be doing these things in the name of self-care because they deserve it. This usually will come in the form of spending money, however much the amount. Of course, we are all guilty of this, but justifying bad spending habits and being financially irresponsible in the name of self-care is something to be concerned about.

Self-care should be less about external consumerism and more about the little internal things we do on a daily basis that keep us fulfilled and whole. Give yourself the same care that you give to others because self-care is a priority and a necessity. Not a luxury.
